Senegal’s Teranga Solutions acquired by HotelOnline, a hotel booking platform

Senegalese Teranga Solutions has merged with HotelOnline to create a new traveltech firm focused in the global frontier markets. The companies individually had systems and business models that were complimentary and together they now have a cloud-based ecosystem platform for independent hotels, thereby making HotelOnline a leader in frontier markets.

Moustapha Ndoye and his brother Alioune Ndoye returned to their native Dakar, Senegal right after college in the US to launch Teranga Solutions. They quickly became a market leader, recognized in 2013 by Demo Africa as one of the most innovative startups on the continent. In early 2018, Destination Senegal, the national tourism agency of Senegal contracted them to rollout their system in 800-plus hotels in Senegal, a model they are replicating across the continent.

Kenya: Travel Tech Start-Up Hotelonline’s Co-Founder Havar Bauck On a Merger That Almost Went Wrong and Fundraising Global Expansion in Emerging Markets

Getting up out of the early growth stage is one of the hardest climbs for start-ups in Africa. This week Russell Southwood talks to Kenyan-based travel tech start-up HotelOnline’s Co-Founder Havar Bauck about growth and finding its “sweet spot” in the competitive world of online travel.

So how did the merger in 2017 go with HotelOga?

The end result of the merger was fine but it was quite a tumultuous story that ended well. Marek Zmyslowski (HotelOga) is no longer with us. HotelOga was two companies: a commercial one in Nigeria and a technology company in Poland.

We did a very thorough due diligence and discovered that HotelOga (in Nigeria) was in financial trouble. Indeed these troubles were deeper than we had assumed. Attempting to solve (the scale of financial loss) would be a gargantuan task. So we called off the merger talks and it then went bankrupt.

Founder Havar Bauck, on Building HotelOnline to Become a Hotel Booking Stalwart

Havar Bauck, the founder and executive Chairman of HotelOnline is a Norwegian but is quick to note that he was born in Norway, but his heart is with his lovely wife and two daughters in Kenya. These two countries aren’t exactly where he spends most of his time, he says airports and planes are the more familiar grounds as his day is quite mobile. Here’s an interview with the founder of HotelOnline.

From a prosperous career to entrepreneurship – how did it all happen?
My goal was always to become an entrepreneur, and I somehow always knew that entrepreneurship was where I would eventually end up. During my last year in college (in Norway), I was looking at several startup projects I could have joined, but none of them really seemed viable. Then I came across an opportunity for a trainee-ship in Kenya. I jumped at it, and the rest is history. In my subsequent professional career, I was always drawn to startups and young companies, so that’s where I ended up working. Because of the love I had developed for the African continent, that’s where I focused my career as well.

SavannaSunrise opens up global online hotel booking in East Africa – B2C processes drive digital take-up and data use

Set up by two Norwegians, SavannaSunrise aims to put locally owned, mid-range hotels in Africa on the online map. These types of online B2C processes are probably going to be a spearhead of both digital take-up and data use. Russell Southwood spoke to one of the co-founders Havar Bauck about what it’s been doing,

SavannaSunrise started with bricks and mortar:”My co-founder Endre Opdal and I set up a budget apartment hotel in 2013 next to Nairobi International Airport. There were no budget hotels and it was a simple idea. Neither of us were hoteliers”.

“We’re marketeers and we both went to the same business college in Norway. We decided to market it online. We started getting bookings from day 1 and by April 2014 we had 100% occupancy. We expanded to 10 apartments and we’re now one of the most reviewed hotels on Bookings.com for Kenya, surpassing even the Hilton.” Reviews are a useful proxy for bookings, data that Bookings.com does not make available.
